1. Kennis en inzicht: de afgestudeerde kan
1a. relevante perspectieven op zingeving en humanisering analyseren vanuit historisch, filosofisch en sociaalwetenschappelijk perspectief;
1b. relevante perspectieven op levensbeschouwing, humanistische geestelijke verzorging, democratisch burgerschap en burgerschapseducatie benoemen en analyseren.

2. Toepassen van kennis en inzicht: de afgestudeerde kan
2a. verschillende perspectieven op de kernthema’s zingeving en humanisering toepassen op vraagstukken binnen voor de humanistiek relevante professionele praktijken;
2b. een onderbouwde visie geven op actuele (internationale) politiekmaatschappelijke ontwikkelingen en diversiteitsvraagstukken op het gebied van zingeving en humanisering;
2c. zelfstandig een wetenschappelijk verantwoord en voor de humanistiek relevant onderzoek opzeijen en uitvoeren.

3. Oordeelsvorming: de afgestudeerde kan
3a. op basis van relevante wetenschappelijke kennis, gebaseerd op kritische (zelf)reflectie en een duurzamedialoog met anderen, onderbouwde en in de wetenschappelijke en maatschappelijke context ingebedde conclusies trekken;
3b. kritisch reflecteren op de mogelijkheden, beperkingen en vooronderstellingen van (humanistiek) onderzoek en een verantwoording geven van de normatieve oriëntatie hierin;

4. Communicatieve (en professionele) vaardigheden: de afgestudeerde kan
4a. zich mondeling en schriftelijk positioneren in wetenschappelijke en beleidsmatige contexten, vanuit humanistische, levensbeschouwelijke waarden en een daarop gebaseerde morele oriëntatie;
4b. individuen, groepen en/of organisaties ondersteunen bij de omgang met zingevings- en humaniseringsvraagstukken, door inzet van dialogische en analytische vaardigheden, schrijfvaardigheden en coachingsvaardigheden op het terrein van humanistische geestelijke begeleiding, educatie en organisatie;

5. Leervaardigheden: de afgestudeerde kan
5a. de eigen levensbeschouwelijke positionering en het eigen normatieve kader verwoorden met inzet van dialogische vaardigheden en met zicht op de eigen persoonlijke mogelijkheden en beperkingen binnen professionele werkterreinen.
Learning objectivesAfter the successful completion of this course:
  1. students know and understand the theoretical and critical aspects of moral and citizenship education and Bildung (Attainment level: 1)
  2. students are able to analyze and evaluate different theoretical perspectives of moral and citizenship education on their contribution to humanization of education and society (Attainment level: 1)
  3. students can identify and establish links between theoretical perspectives and concrete educational practices in creating a contextualized educational design for moral or citizenship education (Attainment level: 2, 3, 4 )
  4. students are able to create an educational design, implement and reflect critically on it (Attainment level: 2, 3, 4)
  5. students are able to articulate, substantiate and apply the personal professional connection with goals of moral education and citizenship education in a professional practice (Attainment level: 2, 3, 4, 5).

Content description

This course examines various theoretical perspectives on moral and citizenship education, with particular attention for the political and practical contexts in which moral and citizenship education takes place. The core aim of the module is to connect theory and practice in relation to moral and civic education activities in mainstream education, in various forms of youth and adult education, and in the context of educating professionals: teachers, (teacher) trainers, (spiritual) counselors and educational advisers. The course discusses the complexity of designing and teaching moral and citizenship education in contemporary neo-liberal, pluralistic society.

Formats

The course consist of interactive lectures, seminars  and self-study. The interactive lectures aim to transfer and expand knowledge and insight. The lecturer will offer brief summaries of the literature and will explain the choice of literature with reference to the goals of the study component. In addition, there are interactive moments consisting of collaborative assignments or the presentation of the results of self-study, after which plenary reflection takes place. During the seminars, students perform practical exercises and design and present an educational activity. They will also meet practitioners.

Examination

The final assignment is a closed book exam,  and an educational design created during seminars. 

The exam is evaluated with a grade. The educational design is evaluated with a pass/fail.

Worldview, academic and professional educationThe module contributes in particular to the connection between academic, philosophical and professional education. The concept of normative professionalization is central to this.
  • Academic training focuses on interdisciplinarity (sociology, philosophy and psychology) in educational studies and on the independent search of for scientific sources and academic literature (literature study and the substantiated formulation of a theoretical standpoint).
  • Professional training concerns the translation of theoretical knowledge into a well-argued educational design, as well as critical reflection on policy documents and educational practices.

Relationship Education and ResearchThe themes and literature choices aim to provide a general overview of the educational field and to connect to research by UvH lecturers and their PhD students on educational practices.
Relationship Theory-PracticeStudents are expected to approach the assignments as future trainers / teachers / researchers while they learn theoretical perspectives and apply these to designing educational activities.
Opportunities for SpecialisationThe student is free to decide the subject of the concluding paper. This offers an opportunity for specialization.
