Sinds september 2024 is prof. Evelien Tonkens Universiteitshoogleraar aan de Universiteit voor Humanistiek. Haar loopbaan begon in 1988 als UD Vrouwenstudies Filosofie aan de Universiteit van Groningen. Vervolgens was ze onderzoeker aan het Nederlands Centrum voor Sociaal Beleid, en verrichtte ze promotie-onderzoek aan de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen, in 1999 afgerond met het veelbesproken boek Het zelfontplooiingsregime. Vervolgens werd we onderzoeker bij het Nederlands Instituut voor zorg en welzijn (nu: Movisie) en daarna woordvoerder Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Emancipatie voor de Tweede Kamerfractie van Groen Links.
Zij keerde terug aan de universiteit als bijzonder hoogleraar Actief Burgerschap aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam (2005-2014), maar behield belangrijke maatschappelijke nevenfuncties, waaronder vaste wekelijkse columnist voor de Volkskrant (2007- 2013), en toezichthouder in de ziekenhuiszorg en de GGZ (2006-2022).
In 2014 werd ze benoemd tot hoogleraar Burgerschap en Humanisering van de Publieke Sector aan de Universiteit voor Humanistiek.
Tonkens was lid van vele door de regering ingestelde advies- en expertcommissies, het meest recent de Adviescommissie Versterken Weerbaarheid Democratische Rechtsorde (Commissie Marcouch), de Adviescommissie Burgerbetrokkenheid bij het klimaatbeleid (Commissie Brenninkmeijer) en de Expertcommissie Burgerschap MBO.
Ze schreef tevens tientallen boeken en honderden artikelen over veranderende idealen en praktijken van burgerschap. Het ideaal van de mondige burger en hoe dit in diverse sectoren van den publieke sector uitwerkt is een rode draad in haar werk

Hoe kan burgerschap bijdrage aan kwaliteit van samenleven? Welke idealen en praktijken van burgerschap zijn te onderscheiden, hoe komen professionals daar mee in aanraking en wat zijn de aanknopingspunten om veranderingen ten goede te bewerkstellingen? De master is toegesneden op professionals die in adviserende of analytische rollen gaan werken in publieke en private organisaties in het sociaal domein (op lokaal niveau of rijksniveau), in het onderwijs (als docent of als adviseur) en onderzoek (onderzoeksbureaus en inspecties), de media of in het maatschappelijk middenveld (belangenorganisaties, sociale fondsen, kwaliteitsbewaking, debatcentra).
