“Students also need to develop a knowledge of the world, an increasingly complicated interlocking world. This includes a knowledge of world history, the major world religions and ethnic traditions. What really brings these aspects to life is the training of the imagination. We’re all born with the capacity to imagine the point of view of another person, but we typically don’t develop it, we use it very narrowly, just trying to imagine how to get what we want from other people. We need to broaden and deepen our imagination by learning how the world looks from the point of view of people different from ourselves and often distant from ourselves, if we’re to make intelligent choices. The accent should always be on a cultivation of imagination relative to the particular blind spots that any culture is likely to have.”
(Martha Nussbaum in conversation with Linda Johnson in Forum Magazine (EAIE), summer 2012)
