The Moral Third, conference with Jessica Benjamin
Psychoanalysis, Witnessing and Repair
This conference is dedicated to the recent work of one of the most prominent psychoanalytical theorists of our time: Jessica Benjamin. In widely read books such as Bonds of Love and Shadow of the Other, and in many influential articles, she has developed a unique blend of psychoanalysis, feminism and critical theory foregrounding the central importance of recognition, the inevitability of its breakdown and possibilities for active reparation of suffering and injury.
In her keynote address Jessica Benjamin will elaborate her views on the transcending of binaries by way of a ‘third position’. She will focus in particular on ‘the Moral Third’ in relation to themes that are of prime importance in our conflict-riddled world-society, namely trauma, witnessing and repair. After a plenary discussion and a break, the morning program will be concluded by commentaries on Benjamin’s views by renowned speakers.
After lunch participants will have a choice of workshops focusing on the relevance of Benjamin’s views for different fields, such as clinical therapeutic practice, education, the development of moral resources in professional organizations and the contribution of Benjamin’s recognition theory to present day critical theory. The conference will be concluded by a discussion between Jessica Benjamin, a panel and the audience on the most important themes that have emerged in the workshops.
