Symposium Performing Equality in Care Work with Jason Rodriquez

The symposium "Performing Equality in Care Work" on 24 May is organised by the chair Citizenship and Humanization of the Public Sector of the University of Humanistic Studies. Keynote speaker is visiting scholar Jason Rodriquez (University of Massachusetts, Boston).  There will be responses by Patrick Brown and Marjolijn Heerings.

Performing Equality: Families, Clinicians, and Medical Decision-Making

Jason Rodriquez (University of Massachusetts, Boston, currently visiting scholar at the UvH) will talk about his recent research on the participation of patients’ families in end-of-life decision-making in the intensive care unit. It is now considered a cornerstone of high-quality care for clinicians to include patients’ families on care teams and to share decision-making responsibilities with them. As clinicians bring their medical expertise and families bring their personal expertise of the patients’ life, how are these two forms of knowledge reconciled given the structure and process of hospital medicine? How are clinicians inclusive – and resistant – to family participation in medical decision-making? How has COVID-19 changed the interaction between clinicians and patients’ families in the ICU?

Responses

Patrick Brown is an associate professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Amsterdam and runs the Political Sociology research programme group. Patrick researches how organisations, professionals and patients cope amid vulnerability and uncertainty, not least through processes of (dis)trust, risk, hope and magic. His book "On Vulnerability: A Critical Introduction", was published by Routledge last summer.

Marjolijn Heerings is an assistant professor at the Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management. Her research focuses on conflicting values in long term health care, such as fostering independence versus preventing harm or emphasis on self-determination versus relational oriented care. In her work Marjolijn develops ‘Ask Us!’: a method for critical reflection, deliberation and co-design to support clients, informal carers and healthcare professionals to attend to these normative complexities.
