Master Citizenship, Professionalism and Civil Society

Our society is demanding more and more from its citizens, such as personal responsibility, self-organisation and the ability to deal with cultural differences. This creates all kinds of moral dilemmas and tensions, for the government, at schools, and in the neighbourhood. In the one-year, full-time master's programme in Citizenship, Professionalism and Civil Society, you learn to give (organisational, policy-related) answers to the opportunities and threats in relationships between citizens, and between citizens and public organisations.

Working on topical questions

Together with lecturers and fellow students, you will work on topical questions on subjects such as diversity, sustainability and livelihood security. The programme starts with a solid theoretical basis concerning the behaviour and education of citizens in a democratic society, their mutual interactions and their interactions with professionals and public organisations. Attention is paid to tensions and moral dilemmas in these interactions and how you can deal with them.

Practice-oriented

Much attention is paid to real-life cases. Right from the start of the programme, you will combine theory with applied, qualitative research. You will design your own empirical research, which will culminate in an internship and a thesis. In this way, you will acquire an academic attitude, and the knowledge, insight and skills you need to make an active contribution, as a professional, to the quality of our society.

Career opportunities

After this master's you can work in the public sector or in social organisations. For example, you could work as a policymaker, quality officer or manager in education or health care, at a housing corporation, the police or in a prison. You can also become a researcher or work as a journalist or teacher in higher education.
