Seminar: The care crisis in Western welfare states

Many people at a road crossing

Join us for a conversation on how Western welfare states respond to the care crisis.

Demand for care is increasing rapidly. Ageing populations, neoliberal governance, shrinking resources and the shortage of trained care workers due to accelerating staff turnover and burnout now pose a care crisis for Western welfare states. In response, governments consider and implement drastic measures, including the restriction of access to professional care and redirection of care demands to informal carers, often women who already have substantial care responsibilities. Another policy approach is the relocation of people with care needs to areas where care is more affordable, such as in Eastern Europe. At stake are the quality of care, gender equality, social and solidarity within care provision.

This seminar discusses these concerns based on the research of our speakers Professor Hanne Marlene Dahl (Roskilde University, Denmark), Associate Professor Kristine Krause (University of Amsterdam) and Professor Jet Bussemaker (Leiden University and chair of the Dutch Council for Health and Society). After their contributions, the floor will be opened to reactions from the audience.
