Profile

Doret de Ruyter is Professor of Philosophy of Education at the University of Humanistic Studies since 1 June 2018. Before that time she held the same position at Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam for 15 years.

In her work she aims to combine her interest in education’s contribution to the meaning in life of children to enhance their possibility to flourish and the importance of ideals for educators with the challenges that human beings face in daily life that ask for moral and citizenship education.

She thereby combines the two central aims of the research of the UvH: contributing to meaningful living in a just and caring society. She does so as a philosopher of education (een theoretisch pedagoog, in Dutch), but believes that this branch of (applied) philosopy has to start in practice – with the questions or struggles of educators and the educated.
