“The sense of community made the exchange a special experience”

Exchange student Tzortzina Likskentai from Greece tells about her semester at University of Humanistic Studies.

“The past few months have been nothing short of transformative. Embarking on my Erasmus+ experience in the Netherlands was more than just an academic exchange—it was an intellectual, emotional, and personal journey that reshaped the way I see the world. From the moment I arrived, I found myself immersed in a student-centered learning environment, where critical discussions were not only encouraged but essential. The courses were challenging yet rewarding, the professors approachable and deeply invested in our growth, and the curriculum constantly evolving to reflect the latest debates and perspectives.”

Sense of community

“But what truly made this experience special was the small and cozy nature of the university. In such an intimate setting, everyone knew everyone—or at the very least, greeted each other with a smile. This sense of community made learning feel collaborative rather than competitive, creating an atmosphere where diverse perspectives were valued and explored. Beyond the academic space, the university prioritized accessibility, inclusion, and well-being in ways that made a real difference. Gender-neutral toilets, free access to menstrual and sanitary hygiene products, and essential supplies were available, reinforcing the commitment to a safer, more inclusive, and accessible environment for all students.”

Embracing the Dutch way of life

“Beyond the classroom, Utrecht quickly became home. Cycling late at night through its picturesque streets, exploring Christmas markets with a warm cup of Glühwein, and experiencing the city’s charm through every season—these were moments of pure joy. Utrecht wasn’t just a place to study; it was a city that invited me to live fully, to explore, connect, and embrace the Dutch way of life."

"And then there were the friendships—the heart of my Erasmus experience. One of the most beautiful aspects of this journey was the intercultural exchange. Out of nowhere, I’d find myself in the middle of an impromptu international dinner, sharing dishes, stories, and laughter with people from all over the world. From game nights to day trips, deep conversations to spontaneous adventures, these connections shaped my experience in ways I never expected.”

Learning, unlearning, connecting

“Of course, it wasn’t always easy. There were moments of doubt, of homesickness, of feeling overwhelmed by the sheer intensity of it all. But with every challenge came growth, and with every step, I gained a deeper understanding of both myself and the world around me. Now, looking back, I realize how much this journey has given me. More than just an academic experience, Erasmus+ in the Netherlands was about learning, unlearning, connecting, and embracing the unknown. It was about stepping out of my comfort zone and discovering a version of myself that is braver, more open, and more appreciative of the beauty of human connection.”

"So here’s to the late-night bike rides, the critical discussions, the lifelong friendships, and the countless memories that will stay with me forever. Thank you, University of Humanistic Studies and Erasmus+, for an experience that will always have a place in my heart.”
