Associate professor of Humanisation and Professional Development in Education
0,8 fte (= 30,4 hours/week)
Profile
The associate professor will be part of a team that is responsible for teaching of humanistic educational perspectives and for research in this area.
The research group holds four interconnected areas of research:
- Research into the theoretical and normative dimensions of educational processes and practices (questions of purpose and justification), including existential questions;
- Research into the moral and political dimensions of citizenship education, including curriculum development and design;
- Research into the continuing professional development of educational professionals in primary, secondary, and higher (vocational) education and other educational settings, with special attention to the moral and political dimensions of educational action;
- Research into the contribution of education to the humanisation of society and into the humanization of educational practices themselves.
The associate professor will be responsible for developing empirical research in the areas 2-4, with a focus on qualitative and mixed methods research, and action-oriented research that addresses questions and needs in educational settings. Relevant areas of expertise include: professional (identity) development; intercultural education; moral-political development; religious, humanist and existential education.
Tasks
The associate professor is expected to:
- contribute to the study of professional and practice development in educational settings at a national and international level;
- contribute to the empirical study of the relation between humanisation and education;
- publish in academic journals and books, and participate in national and international research networks and educational initiatives;
- acquire external funding for research in collaboration with other academic institutes and professional organisations;
- contribute to (inter)national societal debates by publishing in professional journals and books, in policy reports, via social media, digital platforms, and by participating in national and international educational policy networks;
- teach on Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD courses.
Requirements
Applicants need have the following qualifications:
- a PhD in Education, or in the Social Sciences or Humanities relevant to the study of Existential and Moral-Political Education;
- extensive teaching experience at Bachelor's, Master's and PhD levels;
- strong communicative skills in English and Dutch (if the latter is not the case, it is expected that you acquire these at short notice);
- a good scientific track record of empirical research (in particular articles in international academic journals) on themes relevant to the research and teaching profile of the research group;
- a strong network in higher (vocational) education, preferably in The Netherlands;
- participation in public debates relating to existential and moral-political education;
- demonstration of successful grant acquisition;
- experience in leading research projects and teams, and with the supervision of more junior researchers;
- commitment to the research agenda of the University of Humanistic Studies;
- commitment to the humanist tradition as expressed in the preamble of the Strategic Plan 2017-2021.
Position
We offer a temporary contract for the duration of 2 years. With proven ability the contract terms will be converted to permanent. The position is classified as Associate Professor level 2 under the Dutch University Job Classification System UFO, salary scale 13 according to Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) for Dutch Universities, minimum € 4815 to maximum € 5861 brute per month (fulltime).
