UvH and Max Weber Kolleg Erfurt led by Hartmut Rosa strengthen collaboration

15 February 2024

The University of Humanistic Studies and the Max-Weber-Kolleg- Erfurt are consolidating their collaboration. On 15 February 2024, UvH rector Joke van Saane and director Hartmut Rosa of the Max Weber Kolleg signed a letter of intent to this effect.

The Max Weber Kolleg at the University of Erfurt is a centre for interdisciplinary research in the fields of cultural and social sciences, headed by the well-known sociologist and philosopher Hartmut Rosa. This is where researchers from around the world meet and train PhD students. Director Rosa is one of today's leading intellectuals in these fields. His work has been translated and awarded many times. In the Netherlands, he is known, among others, for his essay Leven in tijden van versnelling (Living in times of acceleration). In 2019, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Humanistic Studies. Since then, researchers from both institutions have been working together.

Joke van Saane: "Hartmut Rosa's research and analysis of concepts such as acceleration and resonance are an inspiring example of what interdisciplinary research of social sciences and humanities can look like. At the University of Humanistic Studies, we also deal with questions of humanity in uncertain times from an interdisciplinary approach. This fits well together. The Max Weber Kolleg welcomes researchers from all over the world, with a special focus on Asia and South America. This too will inspire joint research projects while further strengthening UvH's international visibility."

New perspective

This week, Hartmut Rosa is in Utrecht with several colleagues to further intensify the exchange. Ten researchers are sharing their reflections on the challenges of normative, interdisciplinary research aimed at achieving sustainable social change. On Thursday evening, Rosa gave a public lecture in which he presented his new ideas to students, staff and interested parties. We have overshot in our mode of criticism, Rosa said. It is time to change tack. What we need to change the world is perspective, and affirmation and resonance of what is going well.
