PhD Defence Rodante van der Waal

Rodante van der Waal defends her PhD thesis entitled Reproductive Justice To-Come: From Obstetric Violence to Abolitionist Care on 10 February 2025.

Summary

Through a critical analysis of reproductive violence during abortion, pregnancy, and birth, van der Waal works towards a reproductive justice to-come. Engaging with resistant activist practices of care in the Netherlands, the central thesis of this study is that reproductive justice must be achieved through a radical re-appropriation of relationality in reproductive care to safeguard the access to knowledge and care needed for safe bodily self-determination. Through empirical research as well as decolonial, feminist, midwifery, and Black theory, reproductive justice is re-imagined as abolitionist care, grounded on the abolition of authoritative obstetric institutions and restrictive abortion laws, in favour of community practices that truly are relational.
