Inaugural lecture by Christoph Henning
On Friday 14 February at 15.30, Christoph Henning, Professor of Philosophy and Humanism, will deliver his inaugural lecture at De Leeuwenbergh in Utrecht. In his lecture 'Humanism in crisis: A new draft of humanist philosophy' he argues that humanism has a lot to say if it is contextualized and re-applied.
At a time of permanent ecological, social and political crisis, humanism has come under fire. Does it still have something to say? In view of these uncertainties, Christoph Henning re-reads the humanist approach in its global entangled history. He shows how it emerged in times of upheaval as a reflexive self-questioning and openness towards others, including other ways of understanding nature and society. It therefore has a lot to say if it is contextualized and re-applied. In this way, humanism can be heard anew as a critical voice that provides new perspectives into social and ecological dilemmas.
Christoph Henning focuses on various philosophical themes related to humanism. One of his books related the ethics of flourishing to questions of politics: How can we achieve a good life for all? Do states have duties to promote human happiness? He is also an expert in the field of critical theory and editor of a series in the history of philosophy.
