Room for rituals in secondary education
- Period: February 2023 - September 2024
- Status: ongoing
Rituals mark transitions, offer a moment of peace, and create and strengthen communities. Rituals focus on a specific (shared) experience, such as celebrating something, mourning or letting go. In education, public and otherwise, there are large and small rituals: annual celebrations, saying goodbye to old students and welcoming new ones, and daily ritualisations.
Description
In religious education, the organisation of religious rituals also expresses the identity of a school (community), and contributes to pupils' personal development. However, little is known about about the role of rituals in public Secondary Education (VO).
Therefore, in this study we explore what types of rituals public VO schools in the Netherlands organize, what they think is desirable and what concerns teachers and school leaders encounter in relation to organising rituals in their schools. We are curious about to what extent rituals at public VO schools contribute to person formation and community building.
