Prof. dr. Laurens ten Kate

Laurens ten Kate (1958) ) is filosoof, religiewetenschapper en theoloog. Hij studeerde, promoveerde en doceerde aan de Katholieke Theologische Universiteit Utrecht (thans Tilburg School for Catholic Theology), waar hij in 1994 zijn dissertatie verdedigde, De lege plaats. Revoltes tegen het instrumentele leven in Batailles atheologie. Hij was werkzaam aan de Theologische Universiteit Kampen, waar hij een vergelijkend onderzoek deed over de mogelijkheden van een ‘theologie van de differentie’ bij Barth en Derrida, en senior research fellow aan het Heyendaal Instituut voor Interdisciplinaire Religiestudies (Universiteit Nijmegen), waar hij onder meer onderzoek deed naar de betekenis van performativiteit in ethiek, literatuur en religie. Thans is hij als universitair hoofddocent verbonden aan de Universiteit voor Humanistiek (UvH) te Utrecht. Daar doceert hij cultuur- en godsdienstfilosofie, religiestudies en theologie (m.n. de joods-christelijke tradities), globaliseringstheorie en politieke ethiek.
Van 1997 tot 2012 werkte Ten Kate naast zijn academische loopbaan als parttime fondsredacteur filosofie bij Uitgeverij Boom, Amsterdam. Ten Kate geeft jaarlijks diverse cursussen aan de Internationale School voor Wijsbegeerte te Leusden, en voor HOVO Utrecht.

Bijzondere leerstoel
Vanaf 2016 bekleedt Ten Kate de bijzondere leerstoel Vrijzinnige Religiositeit en Humanisme aan de UvH. De leerstoel is het initiatief van de Stichting Stimulering Vrijzinnig Gedachtegoed (SSVG). In 2016 verscheen zijn inaugurele rede, De vreemde vrijheid. Nieuwe betekenissen van vrijzinnigheid en humanisme in de 21ste eeuw (Amsterdam: Sjibbolet). De kernthema's van de leerstoel en van de daarmee verbonden promotie-onderzoeken zijn vrijheid, verbeelding en zin zoeken. Een speciaal focus ligt op het thema goed ouder worden in levensloopperspectief. Vanaf 2019 begeleidt Ten Kate verschillende promotie-onderzoeken op dit terrein. In 2019 verscheen als resultaat van het werk van de leerstoel het boek Is vrijheid altijd blijheid? Vrijzinnige vragen over de vanzelfsprekendheden van onze tijd (red. Wies Houweling; Utrecht: Kok/Boekencentrum).

Onderzoek
Aan de UvH leidde hij van 2008 tot en met 2011 samen met dr. Caroline Suransky de onderzoeksgroep ‘Burgerschap in een interculturele samenleving’. Vanaf 2017 leidt hij samen met prof.dr. Hans Alma (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) het internationale research consortium Simagine: Social Imaginaries between Secularity and Religion in a Globalizing World.
Thans is hij lid van de leerstoelgroep Zorgethiek van de UvH, waarin filosofen, ethici, theologen en sociaal-wetenschappers zich bezig houden met de culturele, maatschappelijke en politieke betekenissen van zorg, ondermeer in relatie tot kunst, spiritualiteit, levensloop en ouder worden, en duurzaamheid.

Belangrijke publicaties
Hij is co-auteur en co-redacteur van onder meer Het wakende woord. Literatuur, ethiek en politiek bij Maurice Blanchot (1997), Flight of the Gods: Philosophical Perspectives on Negative Theology (2001), Retreating Religion: Deconstructing Christianity with Jean-Luc Nancy (2011), en Religion, Community, Borders: Social Imaginaries and the Challenge of Pluralism (special thematic issue of Interdisciplinary Journal for Religion and Transformation in Contemporary Society - 2020). Tevens schreef hij een Encyclopedie van de filosofie (2007), maakte hij samen met prof.dr. Marcel Poorthuis het handboek 25 Eeuwen theologie: Teksten en toelichtingen (2017).
