Profile
Liorah Hoek is a transdisciplinary artist and researcher, working in the borderlands of arts, media, culture, academia and disability and mad justice. As an external PhD candidate they are part of the Care Ethics chair and specifically the endowed chair for Disability Studies. In an inclusive artistic research they work together with other artists with plural personalities to create new hermeneutic resources for understanding everyday experiences of plurality. The research counters the norm of singularity. Furthermore the artists aim to explore together what their accounts can teach us about the human condition, and what new knowledge and possibilities these yield for people—whether they are singular or plural.
Their underlying research interests concern how we can find knowledge in unexpected places, including epistemic justice and full inclusion of silenced voices as well as fields of knowledge that are not commonly integrated in academic practices, like for instance visual, bodily, relational or creative abd playful knowledge production.
Liorah has been trained as an artist at Rijksacadmie in Amsterdam and as a scholar at the KU Leuven during a master in Cultural Studies and a research master in Literary Studies, focussed on narratology. Her previous academic work was concerned with the lack of research into how stories are made, studying depictions of plot models in creative writing handbooks.
They work as a researcher at the foundation Disability Studies in the Netherlands and as a freelancer in media and culture. They teach Mad Studies in a Disability Studies course at the University of Amsterdam. Currently they are developing a Disability Studies course for the new Intersectiona Gender Studies Master at the Radboud University, where they will teach Mad Studies and lead studio sessions in serious game development.
