Final Conference ‘Dialogics of Justice’
How to repair historical injustice?
The Dialogics of Justice team organised their final conference on April 15th-17th 2026. They studied the rise in civil cases brought before Dutch district courts by people adversely affected by colonial violence, military missions, sexual abuse, and environmental harm. Can court cases truly foster responsibility and bring about the recognition people long for? What does justice need to look like to become transformative for claimants and wider society?
Over the past five years, we studied five cases of institutional injustice, uncovering shared logics of systemic injustice and coloniality. At this conference, we will share our findings and discuss the future research agenda for the Historical Memory and Transformative Justice chair group with (inter)national scholars, stakeholders and affected parties. We invite you to join us!
It started with a kick-off public event on April 15th at BAK Basecamp, with human rights advocate Liesbeth Zegveld as our keynote speaker. Hasan Nuhanović, who together with Zegveld held the Dutch state liable for the killing of his family during the Srebrenica genocide, and his daughter Nasiha will then share their expertise and experience on the lived and transgenerational impact of court cases. On the 16th and 17th the conference continued at the University of Humanistic Studies.
