Profile

Since 2013, I have been affiliated with the University of Humanistic Studies as an Assistant Professor of Care Ethics & Policy. In addition, I have held positions as a college instructor and as a postdoctoral researcher at Utrecht University of Applied Sciences and Amsterdam UMC, respectively.

I have been involved in various studies and research projects in different capacities (advisor, (principal) investigator, postdoc, project coordinator, and/or co-advisor). I am currently a member of four advisory bodies: the national CEG committee of the Center for Ethics and Health, the Vilans Accreditation Committee for Disability Care, the Council of Imagination at the ZIN Academy, and the Alzheimer Europe Expert Advisory Panel. I also serve as a board member at the Odion Foundation, a disability care organization in North Holland.

I am half English and completed my secondary education in England. I then studied philosophy at VU University Amsterdam and applied ethics at Utrecht University (graduating cum laude with a thesis on unhealthy diets and paternalism). I then worked as a Ph.D. candidate at the EMGO Institute of the VU Medical Center. There, I conducted qualitative empirical research on the ethical aspects of using monitoring technology (home automation) in residential care for people with dementia and intellectual disabilities. My dissertation, titled “Exploring good care with surveillance technology in residential care for vulnerable people,” is available from VU University Press.

In my research, I focus specifically on (the production of) various forms of knowledge about and the normativity of long-term/chronic illness, care, and disability, as well as the interaction between technology and values in healthcare practices.
