As a lecturer at UvH, I have a lot of freedom

“As a junior lecturer, I teach various courses at the UvH: bachelor’s, pre-master’s and master’s. I teach a variety of subjects, from research to more philosophical subjects, mainly in seminars and practicals. Sometimes I also give lectures.

I think the UvH is truly unique as a philosophical university. Here, in addition to academic subjects, you also learn practical skills and work on your personal development and your place in the world. Our students develop their own philosophy of life during their studies. I am happy to contribute to that. As a lecturer, I also have the freedom to design the lessons largely myself. That gives me room for creativity and allows me to design the lessons based on my own inspiration. The content of the subjects corresponds to my own interests, and the fact that I can do something with that is very valuable to me.

For me, a lesson is most successful when students gain a better understanding of the world through discussing the literature and subsequently gain more insight into what they can contribute to it. I really like the link between academic literature and personal insights. For example, the course “Embodied Meaning” includes a lecture on grief and death. Literature about the grieving process is read, and in the seminar, students bring an object that symbolises grief for them. I hope that this will give students more insight into the theme and that they will benefit from it for the rest of their lives, for themselves or in their professional lives, so that they can better understand and support others.”
