Democracy and citizenship

Citizenship is about actively and freely participating in society on the basis of equality. It is diametrically opposed to oppression and subjugation, and presupposes equal rights and equal say for all members of society.

Citizenship is a broad and multifaceted theme. It extends from education to everyday interactions between citizens, as well as between citizens and professionals working in public organisations. It also concerns the mutual influence between citizens and social or institutional developments.

An important political-ethical aspect of citizenship is the construction and maintenance of a democratic society. In a time of increasing social tensions, such as polarisation, the theme is more relevant than ever. It raises questions about inclusion, participation and the role of citizens in shaping a just society.

Within our university, we study and question citizenship in all its facets. We contribute to knowledge development, public dialogue and the training of professionals who can act critically, responsibly and with commitment in a democratic constitutional state.
