Space for rituals in secondary education
- Period: February 2023 – September 2024
- Status: completed
Rituals mark transitions, offer a moment of peace, and create and strengthen communities. Rituals focus on a specific (shared) experience, such as celebrating, mourning or letting go. In education, both public and otherwise, there are large and small rituals: annual celebrations, saying goodbye to old pupils and welcoming new ones, and daily rituals.
Description
In religious education, the organisation of religious rituals also expresses the identity of a school (community) and contributes to the personal development of pupils. However, little is known about rituals within public secondary education.
Therefore, in this study, we are exploring which rituals public secondary schools in the Netherlands organise, what they consider desirable in this context, and which points of attention teachers and school leaders identify in relation to organising rituals in their school. We are curious to find out to what extent rituals at public secondary schools contribute to personal development and community building.
