Moving forward together after the crisis: The impact of coronavirus measures on cooperation around people with SID

The COVID-19 measures led to far-reaching ethical issues within intramural residential care facilities for people with severe intellectual and/or multiple disabilities (SID). This caused a great deal of uncertainty, stress, powerlessness and frustration, both in the primary process and in policy-making. As a result, mutual relationships and coordination, which are crucial in the care of this vulnerable target group, came under pressure.

In this healthcare ethics case study, we investigate how relationships and coordination are taking shape after the coronavirus crisis in three residential care facilities for people with SID. We pay special attention to the impact of stories about the coronavirus measures, as told by relatives, carers, behavioural experts, managers and policymakers. The aim is to understand how cooperation in the care of people with SID can take shape in a way that 1) does justice to all those involved and 2) is sustainable in the current labour market and in future crisis situations.
