Family participation in dementia care
- Period: 2019-2022
- Status: completed
Family can play an important role in nursing home care for elderly people with dementia. But what can you ask of loved ones and what is too much? This empirical-ethical study examines how loved ones experience participation in nursing home care, the extent to which they feel moral pressure and how this pressure can be prevented.
Description
Through interviews, conversations and observations, the researchers reveal what family members find uncomfortable. They then investigate how everyone involved can better deal with these “moral discomforts”. The results are used to develop a guide that helps care providers and family members agree on what constitutes appropriate family participation for them.
The full name of this study is Family involvement in dementia special care units. From moral perils to well-balanced practices of collaboration. It is part of the ZonMw programme Ethics and Health 3.
