Everyday citizenship in the neighbourhood

How do you ensure that very different residents in a neighbourhood live together harmoniously, and that residents who need support are also included in the support networks in the neighbourhood?

Collaborating healthcare and welfare organisations and active local residents in Utrecht are investigating this together with the University of Humanistic Studies, Utrecht University, Utrecht University of Applied Sciences and Panel Meetellen.

The research focuses in particular on Utrecht residents with mental health issues, intellectual disabilities, a history of homelessness and/or acquired brain injury. Through this action research, the partners aim to strengthen cohesion in neighbourhoods and districts. The partners intend to clarify which interventions help residents with support needs and how formal and informal care and support providers can best work together to provide this support. The partners also plan to investigate what coordination is needed at the administrative level.

The research stems from the Thuis in je Wijk (At Home in Your Neighbourhood) project, in which formal and informal care and welfare organisations and the municipality have developed an approach that will be launched in the Overvecht, Noordwest, Kanaleneiland and Leidsche Rijn neighbourhoods. Care and welfare organisations are working together to create neighbourhoods where residents can meet and support each other.
