Dialogics of Justice: Assessing Recognition as a Process of Resonance

Nicole Immler has received a Vici grant from NWO for her research proposal ‘Dialogics of Justice’, a study of (legal) restorative practices following human rights violations: when do people feel recognised? This will enable her to assemble a team of four researchers over the next five years who will follow civil lawsuits concerning transitional justice at home and abroad.

Description

Over the past ten years, we have seen a growing demand worldwide for recognition by victims of colonial violence, failed peace missions, sexual abuse and ecocide. This recognition of suffering is increasingly being viewed in legal terms and subsequently resolved with financial compensation. But do these procedures offer the recognition and redress that these claimants hope for?

Through empirical research – in the Netherlands, Indonesia, Nigeria, Bosnia and other places – this project studies the social dimension of recognition claims in order to meet the urgent need for more knowledge about how to make recognition procedures more effective. The main goal is to look beyond an individualised victim approach and also address the structural aspects of injustices by examining the dialogue between claimants and accused institutions, such as the state, the army, the church and multinationals.

This project examines recognition requirements as a call for dialogue, with an emphasis on the social dimension of recognition.
