Diversity and inclusion

The University of Humanistic Studies aims to be a study and work environment that offers space, respect and appreciation for differences. An environment in which diverse forms of learning and working can flourish.

We believe that diversity, equality and inclusion enrich academic debate and are an important dimension of academic quality. These values therefore play a major role in education, research, personnel policy, student recruitment and in the UvH’s partnerships.

In 2025, Caroline Suransky was nominated Professor of Education, focusing on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) in higher education.

Key points of UvH policy:

  • Diversity

Greater diversity among staff and students. This is reflected in the presence of different forms of diversity, including ethnic origin, gender identity, sexual orientation and functional limitations. In addition, we want to collaborate more across disciplinary boundaries and are open to different ways of acquiring knowledge and conducting research.

  • Equity

Greater awareness of the existence and impact of prejudice and discrimination. We are committed to equal opportunities and fairness by creating conditions in which employees and students from different backgrounds can develop to their full potential.

  • Inclusion

Ensuring a study and working environment in which differences are welcomed, in which there is room for open dialogue and the respectful exchange of different perspectives, and in which everyone can feel at home and involved.

Accessibility

The UvH is committed to promoting accessibility by signing the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (with specific attention to accessible education) and the City of Utrecht’s Accessibility Agreement. This underlines our commitment to an inclusive learning and working environment in which everyone can participate fully.

Gender Equality Plan

The UvH has a Gender Equality Plan. This is an admission criterion for higher education and research organisations that wish to participate in Horizon Europe research programmes.
