Lara van Osch (BA)

Lara van Osch completed the Bachelor programme of Humanistic Studies:

“Even though you take courses on all sorts of subjects, there is one clear constant in this study:  the inquiry into what it means to be human, with the help of various scientific disciplines. The programme has helped me think about society and the day and age we live in.

I learned a lot in a course given by professor Joep Dohmen, for instance – our world keeps getting bigger as a result of globalisation, which brings lots of possibilities and opportunities, but also creates profound doubts and uncertainty. How do you deal with the responsibility to organise your own life? And what can philosophers tell us about this?

A lot of the educational matter deals with ‘values’. Why do you do what you do? What is important to you? The practical courses, for example on reflection, group work and dialogue skills, allow you to investigate these values in your own life. At the same time, you’re learning how to guide others in investigating these questions.

Thanks to the practical courses, as well as the small scale, you really get to know your fellow students. I’ve made good friends here with whom I feel strongly connected. Not a week passed in which we didn’t do something together, outside the university walls. My fellow students were generally very conscious, concerned and dedicated. Which may sound rather serious, but in fact we had lots of fun together. The University offers plenty of room for music, drama, excursions and parties.”
